Lola: one year later

Left - The day after we brought her home, shaved down, her bones showing, and afraid of everything imaginable. She wouldn’t leave the bedroom unless she absolutely had to eat or go outside, and never made a sound. She didn’t even go upstairs until 5 months ago.

Right - At the dog park today, tail wagging, tongue out and going nuts with Rocky. She sleeps in the bed with us sometimes, ventures all around the house and is quite the talker.

Thanks again to Daryl and the Frisco Humane Society.

We’ve lucked out again

We’ve been trying to find a friend for Lola for a while now and we’ve found him. This is Rocky and he’s officially ours as of tonight. Thanks to Maggie with Animal Rescue of Texas (who also happens to pitch in at the Doggie Zen Den) and was familiar with Lola and everything she’s been through so far.

I first learned about Rocky on a posting at the Zen Den and we arranged with ART to take Lola to meet him two weeks ago, and for us to foster him last week. They hit it right off and have really bonded. He’s about 2 years old, 49 pounds, part Australian Shepard (a big selling point for us), part Lab and has already had obedience training. He’s really helped Lola come out of her shell, and she’s been responding to me more which is a great feeling. Rocky has also helped Lola learn how to get put up onto the bed at night, so the 4 of us in the bed is quite cozy.

We really have lucked out to find 2 dogs that are the absolute right fit for us. Needless to say, we’re big supporters of Dog Rescue Organizations and Humane Societies.

I’ve posted some pics in Rocky’s gallery with more to come, I’m sure.

Who is this?

Here’s the deal, we were at Petsmart in Frisco three weekends ago to check out the available dogs from the Frisco Humane Society to see if we could possibly find a friend for Lola. We ended up fostering a puppy for 4 days, and now we’re about to become a 2 dog household. His name is Bobby and he’s a 16 week old Jack Russell/Lab mix (I still can’t picture that). Lola and Bobby got along famously and Lola was a totally different animal when Bobby was with us and we both love him so we’re supposed to pick him up Sunday night for good.

Here’s pictures from the weekend we fostered him.

I want to say thank you again to Daryl, Julie, and the Frisco Humane Society for being so patient with us and for all the great work they do.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, after a month, Bobby and Lola were not getting along as they were at first and we’ve had to return him to the FHS for someone else to adopt. He was a normal puppy, but he was becoming too dominant over Lola (biting, taking her food) and she wasn’t standing up for herself. We know Daryl and the FHS will find a home for him quickly and they want the best for Lola, too.

Pupdate

We visited Dr. Sharp on Monday to get the whole Carfax report on Lola and he thinks that she is between 2 1/2 or 3 years old, is part Brittany not Wemaraner, and her pelvis is still broken but that it has healed somewhat and that the bones have fixed themselves so she’s not in any pain. Dr. Sharp did recommend a 2nd opinion with an orthopedic surgeon about maybe putting a plate in there to fix it, but he said he’s seen cases like this in other dogs and they’re fine. More pupdates as they come through.

3/21: We’ve just returned from a consultation with Dr. Bertrand, an orthopedic specialist, and he says that Lola is going to be fine. He’s amazed at how well she has recovered a mere 9 weeks after suffering multiple pelvic fractures, none of which require surgery to fix. He thinks operating would do more harm than good since she’s walking just fine and able to put weight on her back legs without any sign of pain or lameness. He wants us to keep her exercise restricted for the next 4 weeks, then after that “she’s good to go”. He said that if any health problems (colon blockage, internal obstructions) were going to happen that they would have shown up by now or within the next two months and not further down the road. Thanks for the good news, Dr. Bertrand.

Welcome Home!

After a long day of waiting, we passed the home visit with flying colors and got to bring Lola home last night. We took her to Petsmart for a bath and picked up some toys and food for her. She is so shy, but not skiddish as she’ll let people pet her and not back away.

We think she might have been someone else’s dog before we got her as she’s housebroken and when we showed her the pet bed we got for her she immediately went to it and slept there all night. She’s knows it is a safe spot for her as she will retreat back there after exploring the house little by little.

We also found out that her accident was in January, so she’s less than 2 months from having her pelvis broken. I have posted (and will continue to I’m sure) pictures in the gallery. The ones with the car are when we dropped her records off at the vet and she was ready to get in the car, but I wasn’t.

The new one…

So we’re out to lunch with my sister today and Melinda decides to run down the way to pick some stuff up for the Oscar party tomorrow night and I get a text message that says “don’t come down here if you don’t want to see dogs.” Apparently the Frisco Humane Society was at PetSmart with dogs for adoption. Since Elvis passed away in January we haven’t been looking for a dog, but we had decided when the time was right, and we knew we had found the right dog, then we would do it. When I got there, Melinda was hanging around outside (which she never does at these things) and had pointed out some Austrailian Sheppard mixes, and then pointed me to…
